How tip math works
Tip = bill × tip%. Total = bill + tip. Per person = total ÷ people. A quick mental trick for 20%: take 10% of the bill (move the decimal one place) and double it.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip at a restaurant?
In the US, the standard is 15–20% for sit-down service: 15% for adequate service, 18–20% for good service, and 20–25% for exceptional service.
How do you calculate a 20% tip quickly?
Move the decimal one place left to get 10%, then double it. On a $46 bill: 10% is $4.60, so 20% is $9.20.
Should you tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total?
Etiquette guides generally say to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, since tax is not part of the service. In practice many people tip on the total; the difference is small.
How do you split a bill evenly?
Add the tip to the bill to get the total, then divide by the number of people. This calculator does it for you — enter the bill, tip percent, and party size.
What is a good tip for delivery?
For food delivery, 15–20% of the order subtotal is standard, with a minimum of a few dollars for small orders.
