Strength: bits of entropy

How secure passwords work

Security comes from entropy: length × unpredictability. A 16-character password drawn randomly from 94 possible characters has about 105 bits of entropy — no computer can brute-force that. This generator uses crypto.getRandomValues(), your browser's cryptographic randomness source.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a strong password?

Length plus unpredictability: at least 12–16 characters drawn randomly from uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols. Avoid words, names, and patterns.

How long should my password be?

16 characters or more for important accounts. Each extra random character multiplies the guessing effort enormously.

Are generated passwords truly random?

This tool uses your browser's cryptographic random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues), the same source used for security keys — not a predictable pseudo-random function.

Is it safe to generate passwords online?

Here, yes: everything runs locally in your browser and nothing is sent or stored anywhere. Never use a generator that sends your password to a server.

Should I reuse passwords?

No. Use a unique password per site and store them in a reputable password manager — that is the single biggest security upgrade most people can make.

What is password entropy?

Entropy, measured in bits, is the unpredictability of a password. A 16-character password from all four character sets has about 105 bits — far beyond brute-force reach.
