How GPA is calculated

GPA = Σ (grade points × credit hours) ÷ Σ (credit hours). Each letter grade maps to points on the 4.0 scale (A = 4.0 … F = 0). Courses with more credits weigh more heavily.

Frequently asked questions

How is GPA calculated?

Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours, add those quality points together, then divide by total credit hours. For example, an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course = 12 quality points.

What are the standard grade point values?

On the common 4.0 scale: A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C− = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D− = 0.7, F = 0.

What is a good GPA in college?

Generally 3.0+ is considered good, 3.5+ is strong (often Dean's List), and 3.7+ is excellent. Graduate programs and competitive employers often look for 3.5 or higher.

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

Unweighted GPA caps at 4.0 for all courses. Weighted GPA gives extra points (e.g. 5.0 scale) for honors, AP, or IB courses to reflect difficulty.

How do I raise my GPA?

Because GPA is credit-weighted, earning high grades in high-credit courses moves it most. Retaking a failed course (where your school replaces the grade) can also help significantly.

Do all schools use the same GPA scale?

No — scales and grade-point mappings vary by school and country. This calculator uses the standard US 4.0 scale; check your school's policy for official figures.
